Active Schools

The Active School Flag initiative was launched by the Department of Education in May 2009. The purpose of such an initiative is to recognise schools that strive to achieve a physically active and physically educated school community.

We have been very successful in the past and have already achieved three active flags.

We are currently in the process of renewing our application and striving towards our Fourth Active School Flag in 2023/2024.

In order to achieve the ASF our school must:

  • Complete ASW (Active School Week) as part of our annual school calendar.
  • Prioritise fun and inclusivity during ASW.
  • Involve pupils in the design and organisation of the ASW programme. (Our Active School Committee).
  • Satisfy all of the ASF success criteria for ASW.

We have a number of ongoing initiatives ongoing in our school throughout the year:

  • Go Noodle – classroom activities.
  • Active Breaks.
  • Active Homework on P.E days in association with The Irish Heart foundation.
  • GAA lessons in partnership with Kilmacow GAA Club.

With many more still activities to come this school year including:

  • Active Schools Week.
  • Sports day.
  • Walk on Wednesdays.
  • Soccer Blitz.
  • GAA blitz.
